November 12 - Noted Darwin Scholar - Featured Speaker (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM)
Dr. Niles Eldredge, noted author on Darwin and evolution theory, and curator of Paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC, will speak.  This program, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Zebro Family Conference Room, located in Roswell Park Cancer Institute's Center for Genetics and Pharmacology.  Dr. Eldredge is visiting Buffalo as part of the project Darwin: The Origin of Influence, a collaborative exhibition assembled by the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library and the University at Buffalo, on view at the Downtown Library (1 Lafayette Square) November 9 - February 12, 2010.  For more information on this program and the exhibition, please click here

Join presenter Alan Ruttenberg as he describes the Neurocommons Project - an attempt to create a publicly accessible, integrated set of disparate biomedical knowledge bases aimed at supporting computational aided discovery in the domain of neurological diseases. This approach will be illustrated using drug discover in Alzheimer's, clinical research on treatment of Parkinson's Disease, facilitating basic research for Huntington Disease, and enabling multimodal and multiscale neuroimage integration and analysis. Call for Applications to Present - Deadline Extended
The Emerging Company & Innovator’s Showcase will feature the most exciting new companies and technologies emerging from leading academic institutions. Emerging companies, defined as companies being incubated at universities or working in collaboration with a university to develop its technology, as well as innovators, including inventors and technology transfer officers, are invited to apply for a 15-minute presentation slot. Molecular diagnostics can detect many types of diseases at the earliest stages and are expected to be among the highest growth opportunities within the larger field of In-Vitro Diagnostics.  Clinical use of these tests promises to improve patient outcomes and lower healthcare costs.  Yet, molecular diagnostics for clinical use are only now emerging and many factors are interacting to both advance and delay the adoption of these innnovations in clinical practice.

Join us for our February presentation featuring John Knopf Ph.D., CEO and Founder of Acceleron Pharma (Cambridge, MA). Dr. Knopf received his Ph.D from SUNY Buffalo and is now leading this privately held biopharmaceutical company through the successful development of unique GDF-targeted therapies for bone growth, muscle growth, and anti-angiogenesis. In February of 2008, Acceleron signed a co-development deal with Celgene worth $50 million upfront and in December published Phase I trial results for the first biologic agent included in this deal. Luncheon Program, scheduled from noon to 1:30PM, will be $50 per person and is entitled Building the Knowledge Economy in Upstate New York.  The keynote speaker will be Daniel C. Bioinformatics and Technology Applications in Medication Management UB Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences
The Steering Committee of the CoEBLS Medication Management Research Network (MMRN) is planning a one-day symposium to discuss the current opportunities to integrate electronic health records, ePrescribing software, bar code technology, biomedical ontology, and digital, personalized medical records in a statewide initiative.  The outcome of the meeting will be to develop a vision and operational plan for interoperability among regional hubs across New York State leading to an integrated MMRN.
