LIFE SCIENCES EDUCATION PROJECT DETAILS

Project Objective:

To increase awareness of and involvement in life sciences and more importantly, workforce talent development opportunities through the dissemination of information, materials and educational experiences to a broad audience ranging from the general public to select targeted adult and student populations.

Implementation Strategy and Plan:

This project will utilize collaborative efforts to develop a community-wide program that facilitates relevant audiences being contributors and/or recipients, as appropriate. The program will be implemented in a staged approach to gain experience among the contributors working together to develop program components that a) address a range of life sciences education and workforce development areas from the scientific to the industry end of the spectrum and b) are flexible enough to address a broad array of audiences.

Life Sciences COE Tours & Demonstrations:

Tours and demonstrations will be conducted at the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Life Sciences, where there is a focus on scientific discovery and workforce and economic development in life sciences. A sequence of tour ‘stops’ will be created to provide the program content to each of the target audiences. Content will be adjusted appropriately for each audience who will participate in the tours. There will be varying levels of tour ‘guides’ and hands-on demonstrations available:

  • Tour stops that address the following topics: DNA Isolation, Karyotyping, Commercialization, and Computer Visualization.
  • Tour stops plus one-two high technology research and industry experts and/or demonstrations
  • Tours stops plus three-five high technology research and industry experts and demonstrations

Life Sciences Experience Outside COE:

High School Students AP Biology Program: This program will involve a target group of 2-4 high school AP Biology classes, who receive a multi-day bioinformatics/life sciences program experience in their classroom. The program will be based on an activity called “Fowl Play”, provided by Dr. Mark Gallo of Niagara University. To visit Dr. Gallo’s “Fowl Play” website, click here.
