LIFE SCIENCES EDUCATION PROGRAM
The New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Life Sciences is proud to announce the launch of the Life Sciences Education Program. The program seeks to increase awareness of and involvement in life sciences. More importantly, the COE looks to establish workforce talent development opportunities through the dissemination of information, materials, and educational experiences to broad audiences ranging from the general public to select adult and student populations.
The project utilizes collaborative efforts between our lead academic institution, the University at Buffalo, and our two research partners, the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute and Roswell Park Cancer Institute, to deliver a community-wide program that facilitates learning and involvement with audiences being both contributors and recipients in the program. The program will address a range of life sciences education and workforce development needs in both science and the industry.
The program begins with life sciences demonstrations and tours of the COE. The COE tour will launch you into a world of discovery, right in your own backyard. What are bioinformatics and life sciences? What kind of cutting edge research is happening here? How does all this exciting work lead to new inventions that make our lives better everyday? Take the COE tour to find out more!
Tour stops involve hands-on learning activities including:
Karyotyping
How do we look for genetic diseases in humans? Try karyotyping, one of many techniques that allow scientists to find several thousand possible genetic diseases.
DNA Isolation
DNA contains all the genetic instructions for human growth. Try one of the methods that allows scientists to study DNA. .
Visualization
Scientists love to see their work come alive, just like you. Experience what computer technology can do to help researchers understand large amounts of biological information through 3-D and other visualization tools.
Commercialization
Science and business – what do they have to do with each other? Find out how researchers and industry work together to create new health care products and services which make people healthier.

Quantum Rod System May Safely 'Sneak' Drugs, Diagnostics into Brain
07/16/2008 - BUFFALO, N.Y. --
A unique nanoparticle system developed by University at Buffalo scientists takes advantage of the versatility of bioconjugated quantum rods to ferry novel diagnostic and therapeutic agents across the blood-brain barrier, according to recent in vitro findings. Described in a paper published in Bioconjugate Chemistry, the system uses the rod-shaped semiconductor nanoparticles that are bioconjugated, or coupled, with biomolecules capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier...[Read On...]
